How to track QR code scans
If you printed a QR code and have no idea whether anyone scanned it, you're not alone. Most QR codes in the wild are static. The data is baked into the pattern, so nothing reports back. Tracking requires a dynamic QR code that routes through a server you control.
Here's the short version of how QR Chameleon does it:
- You generate a QR code for your URL (or WiFi network, or vCard contact).
- The code points to a short
qrch.amredirect, not directly to your destination. - When someone scans, their phone hits the redirect first. That visit gets recorded: timestamp, device, browser, country, city, referrer. Then it forwards to the destination almost instantly.
- Every scan shows up in your dashboard in real time.
No URL tagging, no snippets to install, no Google Analytics setup. Tracking is on by default for every code you generate.
Can you track QR code scans with Google Analytics?
Yes, but it's a workaround, not a direct integration. Google Analytics tracks page visits to URLs you own. A QR code scan is a phone opening a URL, so if you tag the destination URL inside your QR code with UTM parameters, GA will register the resulting visit as a scan-driven session.
Typical setup:
- Add UTM parameters to your destination URL:
?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=summer-flyer - Generate a QR code that points to that tagged URL.
- In Google Analytics, filter sessions by
utm_source=qrto isolate scan-driven traffic.
What this approach misses:
- Scans where the user previews the URL and decides not to tap through. No page visit means nothing for GA to count.
- Scans that go to apps, files, or non-website destinations.
- A separate count of QR scans vs. direct link clicks if you share the same URL digitally too.
- The scan event itself. GA only sees what happens after the page loads.
