QR codes vs barcodes, RFID,
and spreadsheets for inventory
A 1D barcode is cheap to print and fine for a simple SKU scan, but it is locked to whatever it encoded at print time and reports nothing back on its own. RFID reads at a distance and scans in bulk, but it needs dedicated readers and tags that cost far more per item. A spreadsheet is where many teams start, and it stays useful, but on its own it cannot tell you when or where a bin was last touched.
Using QR codes for inventory sits in the middle: the tags cost about the same as a printed barcode, any phone reads them with no special hardware, and because a QR Chameleon code holds a short redirect you can re-point it without reprinting while every scan is logged by time and location.
